Contractor was born in Mumbai and lived in Nigeria for seven years, had a wide range of adventures and cultural encounters from an early age. She attended boarding school in London between seven and nine years of age, and then her family relocated into Toronto, Canada, where she spent the majority of her youth and early adulthood. Contractor trained in classical ballet in Toronto. She also excelled academically. The Etobicoke School of the Arts (a public high school that specializes in arts) she studied the theatre and dance. At 16 and after more than 10 years of dance Contractor realized she wanted to pursue acting seriously. After she had completed high school, she won an entire scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed the Master of Arts in Theatre. She also double majored with Psychology and Sociology. Contractor was a participant in the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After an entire year of auditions, she was offered the leading role. After two weeks of performances, she got positive reviews. This play was named one of the most successful productions in Canada by the critics. The opportunity was presented to her to be a part of the Stratford Conservatory. The school is a private institution that accepts just eight men and four woman to study classical theatre. Contractor eagerly accepted. Contractor got a place in the next season of shows and eventually landed the role as Hermia In A Midsummer Night's Dream.
